The last official ride of our tour was around the northeast part of the Island of Elba. We rode from Porto Azzurro to the northern most town of Cavo which was a major iron mining area on the island. We first had to ride to Rio Marina. It is now a neat little port and tourism stop with good gelato (is there any other kind?). We climbed out of Rio Marina which has an iron mining history that goes all the way back to Etruscan times. We then had to climb up to Del Volterraio which is a very, very steep ascent but worth the views at the top. From there we had a screaming downhill run back to Villa Ottone, our Hotel. Great ride with great views of the Med for most of it. Fantastic stuff.
