Sienna to Volterra

The ride from Sienna to Volterra started out in the hazy, cloudy morning and ended in rain. Luckily we outran all but a few drops and the majority of it didn't hit until early evening. The route went through the town of Sovicelle and then climbed up into heavily forested mountains that are know for their boar and mushroom hunting. We then rode into the town of Pievescola after taking a break in Ancaiano which had a fantastic switch back filled descent. Pievescola had a cool statue of two mushrooms in love and a great little place for a cappuccino. A group of us did an extra loop to the town of Radicondoli which was situated at the top of a large mountain with views in all directions. Lunch was a buffet in the town of Mensano which many of us thought was the best lunch of the trip. A mix of fruit, meats, cheese, veggies, and bread. Wonderful! The last part involved a long hot climb into the city of Volterra on a major highway SS68. This had bad traffic but great views. Once through the gates of Volterra we had an easy descent to our hotel.
